I discovered that the most important characteristic in selecting a site for our vineyard is the site's ability to export cold air. Yup, even in North Carolina! If the site does not allow cold air to escape during the winter, the cold air settling on the vines could injure them, or worse, kill them. Also, to get an extended growing season, it is best to get a southward sloping hill for the vineyard. Vines don't like wet roots either so drier soil with good drainage is better.
